You Are What You Eat!

Teenage obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States with nearly 15% of kids between the ages of 6 and 19 considered overweight. Many states, including Texas, have recently passed new laws requiring school lunches to be healthier. There have also been many organizations that have created a heightened awareness through public service announcements (PSAs), including the National Football League. In October 2007, the NFL launched NFL PLAY 60, a national youth health and fitness campaign focused on increasing the wellness of young fans by encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Recently, the organizers of NFL PLAY 60 have requested an increased focus on childhood and teen nutrition. You are a dietician who has been hired by Wylie ISD to create an inspirational video with NFL PLAY 60 for the community promoting healthier food choices. Wylie ISD is hopeful that your understanding of the role of elements and compounds in teen nutrition will help bring awareness to this issue.

How can we apply our knowledge of elements and compounds to inspire our community to make healthier food choices?
